Universal Design for Learning (UDL) at a Glance

The UDL at a Glance infographic provides a visual overview of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a proactive Tier 1 instructional framework designed to reduce barriers and support learner variability. It explains the three UDL principles: Engagement (the why of learning), Representation (the what of learning), and Action & Expression (the how of learning), and includes classroom look-fors and reflection questions to support instructional planning. The resource guides educators in anticipating barriers, establishing meaningful learning goals, designing flexible pathways, and assessing student learning while maintaining high expectations. It also illustrates how UDL and specially designed instruction (SDI) work together to improve access to grade-level content and foster learner agency.
