Reading Instruction: Secondary
This training supports secondary educators in implementing evidence-based reading practices within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to address the complex literacy needs of adolescent learners. Participants will explore how instruction can be effectively delivered across Tier 1 (universal), Tier 2 (targeted), and Tier 3 (intensive) levels, with a focus on aligning instructional strategies to meet the varied reading profiles of middle and high school students.
The session will also examine ways to intensify instruction for students with underdeveloped reading proficiency, including approaches that personalize support, increase engagement, and leverage diagnostic data to inform instruction. To address the persistent challenge of closing literacy gaps at the secondary level, the training introduces five strategic pressure points with the potential to drive meaningful improvements in adolescent literacy, which are highlighted throughout the session and revisited at the conclusion to reinforce their practical application.
Designed for secondary teachers, instructional leaders, MTSS teams, and ESC staff, this training provides actionable tools and insights to strengthen reading instruction and support student success in grades 6–12.
