Using Data to Problem Solve

In this training, educators will gain the knowledge and skills to apply data-driven problem-solving within the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Participants will learn how to set meaningful goals, identify student needs, use data to monitor the effectiveness of interventions, and track student progress in the areas of academics, behavior, and mental health. The session also provides practical strategies for analyzing data and designing targeted supports across Tiers 1, 2, and 3 to improve outcomes for all students.

After completing this training, learners will be able to:

  • Describe how various types of MTSS data (academic, behavioral, and mental health) can inform problem-solving across all tiers.
  • Set goals at the district, classroom, and student levels to identify and address problems.
  • Establish individual student goals using three methods: grade-level benchmarks, slope (rate of improvement), and an intra-individual framework.
  • Use established goals to evaluate response to intervention at the campus, classroom, and student levels.
  • Explain how to apply behavioral progress-monitoring measures to assess student response to behavioral interventions.
  • Analyze problems to develop hypotheses and apply data-based decision-making, including data-based individualization, to design effective interventions.

By the end of this training, learners will be prepared to use data to problem-solve to support the implementation of MTSS best practices.
