TEA Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). Section 504 requires that school districts provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to qualified students in their jurisdictions who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) enforces the protections enshrined in Section 504 while TEA provides technical assistance on Section 504 and a recipient’s due process rights.
