Valued Membership in General Education for Students with Complex Access Needs

(upbeat music) - General education membership for students with complex access needs has been shown through a growing body of research, 45 years of it, since the first public special ed law was passed, and the experiences of people all around the United States, as well as other countries, has been shown to lead to positive student outcomes. Positive outcomes not only for students with disabilities, but for their classmates who do not have disability labels. General education membership and participation is positively correlated with the amount of time students with disabilities spend in general education. So time is important. Time. Time and quality are important. And that positive correlation between time in general ed and positive outcomes has been shown through research to be true for students with even the most complex access needs, the most complex and significant disabilities. There's positive academic outcomes, social relationship outcomes, communication outcomes, behavior outcomes, and positive life outcomes after students get out of school.

In this video, Cheryl Jorgensen, an expert on inclusion for students with the most complex access needs, explains why valued membership in general education so important to students. This video aligns with the Rubric of Effective Practices Quality Indicator IV: Differentiated Instruction.
