Classroom Climate: Creating Independent Work Systems

Here I think is the main takeaway that you'll want to pull from this. One, what are you already doing? If your whole class is working on new material during instruction after the lesson is over and the guided practice is completed, is there a way to incorporate the same task into your task box system? At least then you know that the materials that are there are connected with with what's going on academically and that your students have gotten some very direct instruction on how to use the materials and how to complete the activity. With that sometimes just the work system becomes more independent, more intuitive because the student has worked through the materials already with you or with a paraprofessional. So how can you use what you're already using and cycle that into an independent workstation or work system? Really just think of how you're gonna teach the system as well. Like are you using a left right complete? Does the student transition between activities and clean up after themselves after each one? How do they indicate that they're finished? How do you keep the work fresh and novel so that it's not something that's punishment more than fun? So consider that too as you're building this work system. You have to be really flexible with the materials And that means a certain thing in my head. Sometimes what we think of in our head is that student a needs this, so I need an activity for student a. Student b needs this, so I need a different activity for student b. Student c needs this so I need a third activity for student c and I actually want you to kind of stop thinking that way. It really limits you a little bit because you have so much prep to do it's hard to attack things. What I really want you to think about is I have this activity. I'm going to modify it for student a, I'm going to modify it differently for the needs of student b, and I'm going to modify it even a third way for student c. If you can start to think of how you can take the same activity and flex it for your students, it it will really help you not have to feel like you're doing so much prep and having to come up with a work system that fits all of them in a different way.
