Autism Supplement Guidance Document

This resource is currently being updated to align with revision to new rule and statute adopted in the 24-25 school year. Thank you for your patience. Please review the most recent rule changes at the TEA Proposed Commissioner of Education Rules or the TEA Back to School Updates for Special Educators, Administrators, and Other Professionals for more information.

Texas regulations (TAC 89.1055) require ARD committees to consider eleven strategies for students with autism at every ARD meeting. This guidance document outlines considerations, best practice tips, key points, and IEP example statements for each of the strategies.

Schools must consider these strategies based on peer-reviewed, research-based educational practices to the extent practicable. While all eleven strategies must be considered annually, it is not required that all be implemented. However, if an ARD committee determines one or more of these strategies are not needed, the IEP must include the basis upon which the determination was made.
