Behavior as Communication
- Hey, y'all it's Ayo with tips and strategies to help you survive and thrive in SPED And today we're talking about behavior and communication, but really behavior is communication. (light music) Let's face it, we all communicate with behavior. Not all communication is verbal. We use nonverbal language, gestures, sometimes we just use face. So when it comes to communicating, what system does your student have to communicate their wants and needs? 'Cause if they don't have an effective form of communication, they're going to use behavior. As you're thinking about the behaviors in the classroom I want you to think about the function of the behavior and the system that the student has to communicate, because if a student doesn't have a way to effectively communicate, they'll use that behavior to meet their needs and the best place to start is to think about how to replace that. How can I offer a communication system that will get my student, the needs that they have met in a way that is more pro-social and appropriate for the classroom? How can I meet the function using communication to change the behavior? If you can do those things, you will find that behavior as communication starts to go down and the communication goes up. All right y'all, this is Ayo reminding you to stay strong and teach on. (light music)
