What behavior is functional?

- All behavior is communicating something, but some behaviors are not functional. Some behaviors are dangerous, they might cause injury to that child or to other children, or they might be disruptive and impeding the learning of that child. If you are engaging in negative behaviors most of the day, what are you learning? When are you making friends? So we want to look at behaviors that are socially significant to change. We want to change behaviors that might have a great impact on that child's life. If we can reduce negative behaviors and replace them with positive behaviors, that child will have more opportunities to learn, more opportunities to make friends and more opportunities to be independent in the community. That's our goal, is creating positive pro-social behaviors that will increase independence. (gentle music)
