Docking Station

Docking stations provide a structured and visual way to support transitions within the classroom. They help students with individual schedules understand where they should be at a given time, promoting independence, reducing anxiety, and supporting classroom organization.

When to Use

  • With Individual Daily Schedules - Help students visualize transitions and follow their schedule with minimal verbal prompting.
  • To Support Rotations & Centers - Ensures smooth transitions between activities while preventing overcrowding.
  • For Multi-Use Classroom Areas - Allows students to identify when a space is available and what activity is happening there.

How to Use

  • Set up Docking Stations - Create a visual docking station for each targeted activity or area.
  • Teach Students to Use the Docking Station - Students should take their schedule card and place it on the corresponding docking station and return to their schedule after completing an activity.
  • Maintain & Organize Schedule Cards - Collect schedule cards between rotations to ensure they remain in the correct order.
    • Collect schedule cards between rotations to ensure they remain in the correct order.
    • Monitor students’ use and provide prompting or reinforcement as needed.

Tips

  • Use Color-Coding for Multi-Use Areas - If a space serves different needs, label it with a color instead of a specific activity (e.g., “Green Table” instead of separate labels for snack and small groups).
  • Use “STOP” Signs to Control Access - Place a “STOP” sign on the docking station if an area is closed or to limit the number of students in a space.
  • Ensure Consistency in Visuals - The symbols on docking stations should match individual schedules to prevent confusion.
  • Monitor and Adjust as Needed - Regularly assess whether docking stations are effective in reducing transition difficulties and modify as necessary.

Variations

  • Docking Stations for Individual Work Areas - Assign personal docking stations for students who need individualized workspaces for focus.
  • Magnetic or Velcro Boards - Use Velcro or magnets to help students easily move their schedule cards to docking stations.
