What is the difference between reinforcement and bribery?

You know, in working with teachers, you know, when I'm talking to them about reinforcement, I often hear them say that reinforcement is just. Can you talk about the difference between reinforcement and bribery? Yeah, you know, it's really about timing, right. And so let's say your child is out in the morning. He falls down or they are being grouchy. And then you're and then you say, you know what, if you do a good job, I'm going to I'm going to buy you a cookie. And so what happens then? You're providing reinforcement, right. Or you're setting up a reinforcing and a reinforcing competency based on their problem behavior. So really, what that's the problem with bribery is people will you know, people will engage in problem behavior until you offer up that bribe. And so what happens is you're inadvertently strengthening that problem behavior. We talk about delivering reinforcement. We've set up this continuously ahead of time. Here's the rules. Here's what happens. And so it doesn't capture problem behavior, problem behavior occurs. The rules were set up. No reinforcement happens. I don't sit there. OK, just one more time. You just a little bit more again, because that provides that that continues to reinforce that problem behavior. So it really is a timing issue, though. The bigger issue with that is that individuals. I think that this notion of bribery comes from this idea that people don't acknowledge that their behaviors are reinforced. Right you're everything that you do results in some sort of benefit to you. You like to think that you're autonomous. And I just do this for the right thing. But no, if you make a donation to somebody who is altruistic, you get some sort of social reinforcer for it. Not all cases, but there is something about that. Everything that we do is there. So people think that we should withhold reinforcers because they think it's kind of unfair and they throw the word bribery to kind of help dissuade you from using reinforcers, like you should just be doing it by yourself. But as we discussed before, people don't choose. People are engaging because there are respond to reinforcers that work for them. You can't pick somebody reinforcers. Right? most of us. Right food is a reinforcer. Sleep are. These are all things that are really important to us. But you can't I can't make Dorothy like starwars. I can't make my wife unfortunately watch the stupid TV shows. I do. There is not reinforcer no matter how cool. I tell her it is, it just doesn't work. And so you can't pick somebody that reinforces your reinforcement history as often a result of a lifetime of conditioning. And so by saying that, well, you need to do this because you just should without a reinforcer, you're ignoring the fact that you behave because of all these different reinforcers. And I think that's what people are really trying to get at. Also, I think it's xscape maintain behavior. When I was like, oh, it's just bribery, no reinforcement takes some work. You got to set it up. And so by just saying it doesn't work or it's bribery, you don't have to do it. So when somebody tells you they don't want to use some sort of reinforcement system with the child. Yeah, I think oftentimes, it's escapement behavior.

Reinforcement of a behavior can lead to the desired behavior from a student. But how is it different from a bribe? Dr. Pennington explains.
