Administrator's Role in Transition

(upbeat music) - I think administrators play a critical role as we think about transition. And the first is to really just set the expectation at their school, that transition is important for every person. That it is fundamentally what we do schooling for that we're preparing every kid in that school for college and career. And so transition is not a different thing for kids with disabilities, it's equally important. I think the second thing is to really cast the vision that the kinds of things that happen in that school for any kid with a disability should also be opened up and for kids with disabilities, that they would be encouraged to be part of all the career related and occupational experiences that are available for any student in that school. And so giving that blessing to the fact that this is important for every student, really is important from the administrator role. I think another piece that's really critical is it takes time to do transition really well. It takes time for teachers to be able to collaborate with one another, to be able to develop the kinds of connections with agencies and schools and post-secondary programs and employers in the community. So finding ways to make sure that your staff have the opportunities to develop the collaborations they need becomes important. And the final thing I'd share is doing transition well requires being fluent in the best of what we know works in transition, to have opportunities to learn about and practice best practices and evidence-based practices in this field. So giving your teachers opportunities and encouragement to seek out additional training and to learn more about, this is really, really important.
